It was not my plan to get interlocking carpet mats. I was looking for flooring options for our just finished basement and discovered interlocking carpet tiles. However, all of the carpet tile sources I found only offered limited colors, mostly dark grays and charcoals. Seeking something less depressing and dark when I came across carpet mats. I’m reviewing what we bought.These interlocking carpet mats filled our needs and had a color option we could live with, medium blue. I was concerned about the squishiness, but a sample carpet tile we were sent had the opposite problem, no give as you get with regular pile carpet.Both the sample carpet tile and the carpet mats are the same thickness, the rubber on carpet tiles is just stiffer. The carpeted surface is about same.I had estimated our need as 165 tiles and so we ordered 7 boxes for 175 count. We had twelve full tiles left when we were done.Installation was a little work at the borders, but the mat material was easy enough to cut with either scissors or a boxcutter. The source company “We Sell Mats” did note that there may be color variation between boxes, and there is. The variation is not severe, but it is visible. Also, three of our tiles were discarded for showing lines, like it was the edge or end of a production run. They were unusable. The residual color variation is mostly acceptable given we were warned. Also visible are the joins between the tiles, this was expected.They also did warn to not put furniture on them, so for the heavy bookcases, we cut the mats around the bookcases and kept them on the floor.In the end, for little more than the cost of carpet padding, we have a carpeted basement that looks really good. We can walk barefoot and not get cold feet. The squishiness is almost pleasant for flooring.However, for the rest of the house, I don’t see us using any kind of tiled carpet. For the basement, they’re terrific. The interlocking tiles installed easily and you can lift one out and put in a new one with no effort.
